How to Detox After a Weekend of Overindulging

We’ve all been there. You spend a weekend having fun with friends and family and eating and drinking. Then comes Sunday night and your stomach is not happy with you. The week after Memorial Day weekend and traveling to North Carolina to move out of my school apartment, I was feeling this exactly. My stomach hurt so badly, I was bloated, and my skin broke out from eating so much sugar.

I shared on my Instagram stories how I planned on doing a reset day to get my nutrition and digestion back on track after a weekend of overindulging. I wanted to compile everything I shared into a blog post so everyone can refer back to it when they’re feeling this way. I hope this helps you if you’re feeling really blah after a few days of eating too much sugar and fried foods.

WHAT NOT TO DO

1. DON’T SHAME YOURSELF FOR OVERINDULGING

You’re human! Everyone overindulges every now and then, it’s perfectly normal. The most important thing when resetting is not feeling guilty. Detoxing after a weekend isn’t anything to punish yourself, it’s to get your digestion back on track and helping soothe an unhappy stomach.

2. DON’T SKIP MEALS OR CUT CALORIES

There is no need to cut calories or skip meals. Getting back to your normal habits is the best way to bounce back. Skipping meals will just make you unhappy and guilty for eating what you did on the weekend, which is not what you want to do!

3. DON’T COMPENSATE WITH EXTRA EXERCISE

Same with skipping meals, don’t make yourself do extra exercise to try and work off the weekend. Getting back into your normal workout routine is what will help your body the most.

WHAT TO DO:

1. GET IN SOME PROBIOTICS

Probiotics are great for your gut, so try to incorporate them into your diet the Monday after an indulgent weekend. Things like Greek yogurt and Kombucha are great ways to get some probiotics.

2. PRIORITIZE FRUITS AND VEGGIES

It’s probably a safe bet that you haven’t had many fruits and vegetables over the past few days, so make them a priority in your diet for the day. Make a smoothie for breakfast, have a salad for lunch (a real, meal-sized salad with carbs, fats, and protein, not just a sad bowl of lettuce), and make veggies the star of your dinner. Fruits and vegetables are a great source of healthy carbohydrates and micronutrients, so eating mostly these during the day will benefit you greatly.

3. CHUG SOME WATER

If you spent the weekend drinking alcohol or eating lots of sugar and salt, chances are your body is dehydrated. Make sure you hit your water intake goal to help stay hydrated and replenish after the weekend.

The biggest thing you can do after a weekend of overindulging is to not sweat it. Our bodies are pretty amazing at bouncing back and getting into its normal routines quickly. If you have a day or two where you don’t eat healthily and skimp on your water intake, don’t worry! Life happens, and the most important thing is that you move on without any shame or guilt.
