I feel like whenever we talk about personal growth, we focus on everything we should be doing in order to be our best selves. But in order to truly grow, there are many bad habits that we have to break.
Here are 7 bad habits you need to break as soon as possible. And don’t worry, I’m definitely guilty of all of these things. You’re not alone!
1. CHECKING YOUR PHONE IMMEDIATELY IN THE MORNING
I use my phone as an alarm so it can sometimes be hard to not immediately check my texts and social media, but this is such a bad habit. Lately, I’ve been trying to turn off my alarm and immediately get up out of bed so I’m not tempted to open any other apps on my phone. Once you have a solid morning routine in place, it’ll be much easier to get ready for the day before checking your phone.
2. DRINKING MORE COFFEE/TEA/JUICE THAN WATER
I’ve definitely had days where I can count how many glasses of water I’ve had on one hand. Sometimes the temptation of tasty drinks is just too strong to ignore! You don’t have to give up these drinks entirely, but just don’t make them you’re main drink of the day.
3. COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHER PEOPLE
This is by far the hardest habit to break for me. With social media, it’s super easy to compare yourself to other people. Breaking this habit is easier said than done, but with some work, you will get better and better at ignoring that little voice in your head comparing you to someone else.
4. MINDLESSLY CHECKING SOCIAL MEDIA ALL DAY
We’ve all scrolled through Instagram, closed the app, and immediately opened it back up again without even thinking. Checking social media is fun and I love seeing everything people share, but mindlessly opening social media apps every 10 minutes is not a good habit to have. You can help cut this down by setting time limits on different apps, turning your phone on airplane mode when you’re working on something, or logging out of your account before closing the app so you have to actually log back in before scrolling.
5. SPEAKING POORLY TO YOURSELF
“I look fat today. My skin looks bad. I hate my hair. I wish I was smarter.” Stop sending yourself such negative vibes! Don’t speak so negatively to yourself. Instead, try doing daily affirmations such as “I am worthy. I am beautiful.”
6. BEING A PEOPLE PLEASER
I’m not saying you have to become a super selfish person who only cares about what they want, but you have to stop being a full-time people pleaser. If you constantly say yes to everything just because you don’t want to make anyone mad, you’re going to burn yourself out and end up in situations you don’t want to be in. It’s okay to say no and do things that you want to do.
7. PICKING AT AND TOUCHING YOUR FACE
If you have any pimples, DO NOT PICK AT THEM. I used to do this so much in high school and all it ever did was make my face worse. I’ve gotten a lot better at it over time, but it’s definitely difficult to stop at first. Even if you don’t have any active pimples, just try to avoid touching your face without washing your hands in general. All it does is introduce more bacteria to your skin which is pretty nasty. It’s best to avoid this as much as you can.
